Completed2025
PEWV completed the maiden Major Refit of INS Kalpeni, a Fast Attack Craft of the Indian Navy, to schedule, executing the work as an MoU partner to GRSE. Two main engines were replaced, three reduction gearboxes, three diesel generators and three waterjet propulsion units overhauled, and all three shaft lines realigned.
The Machinery Control System was reconfigured and integrated with main engine controls, diesel alternators, tank level indicators, flood alarms, the HVAC system and fire main — streamlining onboard monitoring. Modernisation included upgrades to the main switchboard and diesel generator control panels. HVAC optimisation involved overhaul of two AC compressors, control systems, robotic trunk cleaning and blower impeller replacements.
Structural repairs included major renewals to steelwork, the full bulwark, aluminium superstructure and bimetallic joints. The work also included surface preparation and full-ship painting for long-term corrosion protection. Crew accommodation was upgraded with new CRCA furniture in all messes, stainless steel panelling in wet areas, and a refurbished galley. Fire-class insulation and non-watertight doors were also replaced as part of the accommodation upgrades.
Special attention was given to the captain’s cabin, officer wardroom and sailors’ messes. Spring-loaded hatches were installed for watertight integrity, and new vertical and inclined ladders were fitted in line with naval safety policy. Lighting systems were upgraded to LED, and navigation and internal communication systems were fully refurbished.
Our thanks to GRSE, Naval Shipyard Kochi and the ship’s crew for their cooperation throughout the refit.
